Borussia Dortmund and Atlético Madrid Clash on Wednesday

With their current form, Borussia Dortmund are yet to face real challenges this season. Most teams who played against the Black and Yellow have lost in a huge way. Still most of these teams aren’t in competition for any title. However, Borussia Dortmund showed quality both on the offense and the defense. Will the German Giants’ current style of play hold against big European names? Given the fact that Borussia Dortmund and Atlético Madrid will face each other for Matchday 3 of the group stage of the 2018-19 UEFA Champions league.

Borussia Dortmund current season is entering into a very critical phase. Although the Black and Yellows have started their season on very good terms, it’s still the beginning of the campaign. With big fixtures ahead, Borussia Dortmund will face Spanish club Atlético Madrid 2 times and Arch-rivals Bayern Munich in a 16 day period.

The game against Atlético Madrid will be the first real test for Lucien Favre’s men. The Spanish giants are very experienced in the European competitions. In fact, they are the Europa league current title holders. Diego Simeone’s side are a very strong team who defend very well. Being a defender himself, Simeone’s strategy revolves around very close spaces in the back and extremely quick counters. With very fast and skilled players like world cup winners Lucas Hernandez and Antoine Griezmann as well as Diego Costa, the second team in Madrid is going to cause problems for the Dortmund defense especially in the absence of Manuel Akanji.

Talking about defense, Atlético Madrid’s back line is one of the scariest in Europe. With the like of Godin in Gimenez, Marco Reus and co will have to produce quality plays to break the defense before making it to a very strong goalkeeper. His name is Jan Oblak and he is one of the best in Europe.

For all that it’s worth, the last time Borussia Dortmund faced Atlético Madrid at home was in the 1996-97 UEFA Champions league, then the Spanish side won the game while the German side won the title (and Diego Simeone was a player back then). Therefore, with the extraordinary performance they’ve shown so far, Borussia Dortmund’s players can make it to the later stages of this years competition. However, injuries must be avoided in order to keep the momentum going. Marco Reus will arguably be one of the best forwards in Europe this season if he stays fit all along.
