Borussia Dortmund will visit Commerzbank Arena in their Sunday match with Eintracht Frankfurt. Last weekend, the Black and Yellow earned a convincing 4-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen. Just three days later, they began Champions League group play, drawing with Barcelona despite dominating the match.
The German Giants look to maintain their form and secure three points against a mediocre Eintracht Frankfurt. Frankfurt are looking to regroup following a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Augsburg last weekend. Their weekend struggles were amplified by a 3-0 loss at home against Arsenal in the Europa League Group Stage.
The narrative heading into this weekend’s clash between Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt seems to favor the Black and Yellow. Dortmund are currently the top-scoring squad in the Bundesliga, while Frankfurt are one of the lowest scoring squads. Moreover, Dortmund’s goal difference of eight ties Bayern for best in the Bundesliga. Conversely, Frankfurt have conceded as many goals as they have scored.
Both Frankfurt and Dortmund have conceded five goals through their first four matches. While the hosts may struggle to find the back of the net, they do well to keep the ball out of their net. In contrast, Dortmund have had little trouble scoring goals, and they’ll need to do that Sunday to acquire three points.
However, Dortmund’s loss at Union Berlin was defined by an uncharacteristically poor performance in the final third. They can’t afford a similar performance this weekend if they want to obtain three points in Frankfurt. With a lot of uncertainty surrounding Frankfurt’s form, Dortmund should expect their hosts to be aggressive from kickoff to the final whistle.
Borussia Dortmund at Eintracht Frankfurt: What’s at Stake?
Dortmund currently occupy 2nd place in the league standings, while Frankfurt occupy the 9th spot. Just one point separates Dortmund and the league’s top club, RB Leipzig. Leipzig travel to Werder Bremen this Saturday and can guarantee their position at the top of the table with a win. However, Dortmund reclaim the top-spot with a win on Sunday if Leipzig fail secure three points on Saturday.
Last season, Dortmund secured four of six possible points against Frankfurt, winning at home and drawing on the road. Heading into this season, the Black and Yellow knew they needed to perform better against weaker opponents. This Sunday provides a tremendous opportunity for Dortmund to secure three points in match where they settled for one point last season. Sunday’s contest in Frankfurt could be critical in setting the tone for the remainder of the first half of the season.
