Borussia Dortmund have purchased 30-year-old center-back Mats Hummels from Bayern Munich. Hummels spent 3 seasons in Munich after leaving Dortmund in 2016. With Bayern, Hummels won 3 consecutive Bundesliga titles.
Prior to joining Bayern, Hummels played a crucial role in leading Dortmund’s back line. In 2011 and 2012, Hummels helped lead Dortmund to two of its most recent Bundesliga titles. Additionally, Hummels won the 2014 World Cup with Germany.
Given Hummels’s previous connections to the Black and Yellow and his established skill, Dortmund fans can remain optimistic about their future. However, it may take some fans a little longer to warm up to their former captain.
After Mario Gotze left BVB for Bayern Munich in 2013, Hummels publicly criticized the move. He emphasized both the poor timing of the decision and the cruelty of signing with Dortmund’s rivals. Three years later, Hummels made the same move for which he criticized Gotze.
However, Gotze has recently reconciled with Dortmund fans, especially following his contributions this past season. Fans may not be eager to welcome Hummels home, but they’ll certainly breathe a little easier knowing Hummels will once again solidify Dortmund’s back line.
