Borussia Dortmund and SL Benfica reached an agreement on the terms of a Julian Weigl transfer deal. SL Benefica agreed to pay €20 million for the defensive midfielder.
Julian Weigl and Borussia Dortmund expressed mutual respect following the transfer. The deal came less than two days after Dortmund confirmed the signing of Erling Haaland. Weigl’s remarkably reliable passing and solid defending highlighted his tenure at Dortmund.
Benfica currently hold the top spot in the Portuguese League, so they hope the acquisition may strengthen their grip on first place. Meanwhile, Dortmund believe that Thomas Delaney and Axel Witsel (when he returns from injury) can sufficiently round out the midfield.
Finally, the transfer grants Weigl a well-deserved opportunity to spend more time on the pitch, and less time on the bench. The German defensive-midfielder made the most of his time at Dortmund. Now he has the chance to further his growth in the Portuguese League.
Weigl played in 171 matches for Borussia Dortmund over the course of four and a half years. He scored 4 goals for the Black and Yellow, one of which came in the Champions League. He also contributed 1 assist and earned a spot on the 2016 German National Team.
