Union Berlin, a team that got promoted from the 2nd Bundesliga tier wins in the fixture against Borussia Dortmund, one of the teams who are competing for the Bundesliga title this season. Although Borussia Dortmund dominated the game in the numbers, the Capital second team managed to play their cards right and win.
Poor Performance and Lots of Mistakes made
Playing on the highest levels of European football requires a great deal of focus and composure, Borussia Dortmund lacked both during Saturday’s game. Despite looking confident in front of the Berlin supporters, Lucien Favre’s men weren’t up to the task. In the 22nd minute, Marius Butler scored easily from a what looked like a heavily rehearsed corner kick.
Soon after, Paco Alcacer scored the equalizer in the 25th minute after a pass by Jadon Sancho. The first half ended with a clear domination by Borussia Dortmund players and a handful of missed chances.
Disastrous Second Half
Only in football, you can look like you dominate a game but still lose in the end, miserably. Despite the weight of the game, Union Berlin players looked like they were convinced they had nothing to lose. Therefore, they played in a confident and well-composed manner. The home team kept themselves organized and made use of chances.
Thanks to mistakes from Mats Hummels and Manuel Akanji, the home team scored two goals in the 50th and 75th minute to seal a well-fought game. Despite changes in the strategy, Lucien Favre failed to bring his usual touch to win the game. The game ended 3-1 for Union Berlin. It is important to note that this is the start of the season. If there will be mistakes to be made and lessons to be learned, better early than later.
From the 2005 Borussia Dortmund, till the title winning squad in 2011 and UEFA Champions League runner up era, Mostafa was always a very passionate Black and Yellow supporter. You would often see him in Coffee shops and Bars on Matchdays. He will be wearing a BVB jersey and sipping on a German beer and most likely swearing at the referee.
