After the winter break, the Bundesliga kicks off again. For the 18th fixture, Borussia Dortmund travel to Leipzig to face local team RB Leipzig. Despite Marco Reus‘s absence, the German leaders manage to secure 3 points as Witsel helps Borussia Dortmund past Leipzig.
Borussia Dortmund win Despite Heavy Injury List
Omer Toprak, Manuel Akanji and Dan Axel Zagadou, all of whom are very important players, are on the injury list for Lucien Favre for this game. In addition, Marco Reus wasn’t included in the starting line up nor in the reserve due to ankle injury. However, the Black and Yellows manpower seemed to know their business. Julian Weigl played the center back role excellently. His timed tackles and quick game reading prevented several conceding opportunities.
Axel Witsel Scores Against Leipzig… Again!
His effort on Match-day 1 got him his first Bundesliga goal. Axel Witsel, Dortmund’s maestro, seems to love to score against Leipzig. In fact, he fired a shot after a corner delivery by Guerreiro making it 0-1 for Borussia Dortmund on the 19th minute.
Then Dortmund players kept resisting Leipzig’s attacking attempts all throughout the game. The back four made it impossible for Leipzig to break while Roman Burki made critical saves all along.
Borussia Dortmund Keep the Gap
Feeling Bayern Munich’s pressure, Borussia Dortmund had to win this fixture. Despite the game’s difficulty, Axel Witsel managed to lead the team to secure 3 important points. The next game will be against Hanover at home. Therefore, it’s an opportunity to start the winning momentum again.
From the 2005 Borussia Dortmund, till the title winning squad in 2011 and UEFA Champions League runner up era, Mostafa was always a very passionate Black and Yellow supporter. You would often see him in Coffee shops and Bars on Matchdays. He will be wearing a BVB jersey and sipping on a German beer and most likely swearing at the referee.
